DAY 94

How does it feel to start another book of the Bible?!

DAILY READINGS

I Kings 1-3 & Psalm 94

DAILY NOTES

1 Kings 1

  • With David close to death, his son, Adonijah, assumes he is to succeed the king; he is the next in line, by the way.
  • 1 Kings 1 doesn't tell us exactly why Nathan chooses Solomon over Adonijah.  We'd have to remember when David wanted to build God a house and what God's response was--who did God say would build the house?  Then read 1 Chronicles 22 (By the way, in our reading plan, we are skipping 1 & 2 Chronicles until we complete the rest of the OT).
    • Everyone would have known about Solomon, I suppose.  So, that Adonijah elevated himself could also be why Nathan would not support him.
  • We tend to forget that Bathsheba is more involved than just that time she first met David.
  • David appoints Solomon as king through a royal procession and has the priest anoint him as king.  As a result, Adonijah is scared of Solomon.
1 Kings 2
  • After David offers Solomon a bit of life advice and what to do about certain people, the king dies.  Solomon assumes the throne in place of his father.
  • Adonijah asks Bathsheba to ask Solomon for permission to marry Abishag.  She was the virgin David's people found to bring warmth to him.  Solomon sees this as a "scheme" against him.  Was he right?
    • It's assumed Solomon considered Abishag a concubine.  That means she would have been considered property of the new king, since she was David's.  So, with that in mind, Solomon could have seen Adonijah's request as a way of infringing on his kingship.  Although, we were told that David did not treat her as a concubine.
  • Solomon has Adonijah killed.  He also ties up a few loose ends that David mentioned.
1 Kings 3
  • God appears to Solomon in a dream.  The fact that it's a dream is mentioned twice. Solomon asks God for wisdom to lead the people.  God grants him wisdom and Solomon immediately has a chance to put that wisdom into practice.
Psalm 94
  • People suffer because of other people.  The psalmist trusts that God will make that right.  Those who trust in God will find help from those who oppress them.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS

I wonder if Solomon thought he was wise enough to be king.  Of course, many of us have heard the story of how God appeared to him in a dream.  Solomon's dream offers him a chance to ask God for wisdom.  God appreciates his sincerity and that he did not ask for riches or any other vain request.  God grants Solomon wisdom.

But even before the dream, we've already been told Solomon was wise.  Solomon's already been told he is wise.  David told him so, at least once.

Did Solomon doubt himself?  Did he doubt what his father told him?

Who knows, but it's interesting because I know we can often doubt ourselves.  Even when other people share with us the things they see in us, we can wonder if they're just being nice or assume they just don't know what they're talking about.  Maybe that's something we can pray about.  We can pray that we'll be open to listen to the encouragement from others and that God would show us what our gifts are.

Stay blessed...john

DAY 83 The relationship between Saul and David worsens.  David is now Saul's enemy.   DAILY READINGS 1 Samuel 18-20 & Psalm 83 DAILY NOTES 1 Samuel 18 Saul's delight for David quickly turns.  Saul is jealous of David's success and the fact that everyone else seems to like David more than him. Of course, we have to think about what this evil spirit from the Lord might mean. Saul tries to kill David.  He even devises a plan to have him married into the royal family so that he can create a snare for him. What does it say about David that, even after Saul has tried to kill him, he still finds it an honor to be married to the family? David escapes Saul's traps.  So, from here on out, the text says that Saul considered David an enemy.  Think he knows what it means to love your enemies? 1 Samuel 19 Verse 5 reminds us of David's fight with Goliath.  At this point, David has fought other times.  What makes that ...

DAY 134 We're reading another prophet today.  Here's t he Bible Project video that describes what the book is about. DAILY READINGS Jonah 1-4 & Psalm 129 DAILY NOTES Jonah 1 Notice the simple, direct message God gave Jonah.  There's no explanation for why Jonah doesn't follow through (yet).  As quickly as the word from God comes, he goes away. The mariners have their own god to cry out to for help.  They ask Jonah to cry out to his God.  Did you notice he never did?  He only told them that he worships the Lord.   The mariners feared the Lord after this.   Jonah 2 When he and the others were in trouble, Jonah didn't cry out to God.  Now that he's sitting inside a big fish, he offers a prayer to God.   And notice even the fish listens to God! Jonah 3 The word of God comes to Jonah again.  This time Jonah responds.  And the people of Nineveh respond with faith in God. Up to this p...

DAY 170 DAILY READINGS Jeremiah 7-9 & Psalm 15 DAILY NOTES Jeremiah 7 Notice the emphasis of God's house having God's name.  It belongs to God, but the people, through their unrighteous actions, have made it theirs.  God's house has been turned into a "den of robbers" (vs. 11).  Remember when Jesus said that (Matthew 21:13)? According to Jesus, what was the Temple supposed to be called? Remember when the people tried to use the ark of the covenant as a weapon against the Philistines (1 Samuel 4)?  That was at Shiloh.  Jeremiah brings that event to our minds again as a sign (vs. 14).  God says that human sacrifice was not his command, nor did it come to his mind.  You'll have to do some wrestling with the story of Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac (Genesis 22). Jeremiah 8 Jeremiah (God) says to unearth the kings' bones and lay them before the sun and moon and all the other gods they served and worshiped.  Ouch. Even animals ...
